Ikat

The first kind of textile that you will find in Bali is Ikat, which is popular among tourists and locals alike. There is every imaginable style and quality that you can chance upon throughout the island, but it is surprising that batik is actually produced in central Java and then shipped to Bali. Bali's own home-produced cloth is a weft ikat called endek. Ikat is made by tying the weft threads of a cloth before it is woven and then dying them so that the tied areas do not absorb the dye.

The cloth is then woven and the pattern, created by the tying of the threads, emerges. This cloth is not very popular with visitors but is indispensable to the locals. Authentic ikat is made of silk but cotton and synthetic yarns are also widely used. Also, keep a look out for kain prada, fabrics woven of silk or cotton and decorated with silver or gold threads or gold leaf. These colorful kerchiefs are worn by temple girls during festivals and take three weeks to a month to weave.

Batik House

The location of shop is at 2A Nogosari Kidul Street, this is a house turned into a shop and is located among houses in what seems to be a nice neighborhood. A row of becak (trishaws) are parked in front of it, ready at your service to take you to whichever houses, which are actually shops you want to have a peek in. They have various types of goods, from clothes to tablecloths. The prices range from ten thousands rupiah to hundreds of thousands, mostly depending on the batik material and complexity of the pattern.

Mirota Batik

It’s a batik and crafts center, located across the Beringharjo Market on Malioboro Street. The prices in this store is slightly above the stuff that you find on the streets, but they do have more selected items.

I’ve always liked to shop here whenever I visit Yogyakarta for any purpose. Let me give you a heads up: in high seasons and in the weekends Mirota is usually jam-packed with visitors.

Market Along Malioboro Streets

Who doesn’t love cheap stuff ?

Well, that’s what you’ll find here. This sidewalk market is composed of endless row of stalls – which are made of only tables and hanger poles.
Most of the goods sold such as t-shirts, batik products, and other traditional mass products like rattan purses and silver jewelries. It can be your choice to enjoy the street ambience, rather than entering the Beringharjo market.

Bali Shopping Center

Shopping is a serious hobby. Where better to practice your bargaining skills than Bali? In Bali, unless the product is price-tagged, bargaining is the "norm". Try not to accept the first price that you are given, as most vendors add on anything between 30%-50% extra. You'll get more for your money, if your prepared to spend time and smile whilst bargaining. Although tempting, try not to make any major purchases for the first few days. Look around, take your time, bargain hard and then buy.

Bali's shopping centers and department stores are a wonderful place to start your Bali shopping spree. Air-conditioned and free of hawkers, goods from all over Indonesia are available at very reasonable prices. Many of the labels you see here are not merely rip-offs, they are often produced under license in this country and can therefore be sold at great savings. Even brand name cosmetics can be bought at excellent prices as they attract little duty in Indonesia. Shoes and children's clothes are always a great buy in Bali's departments stores, the quality and variety attract many shoppers and the prices are hard to beat.

Ladies and Men's fashions range from cheap and tacky to well made local and international designer labels, the canny shopper will always find something to suit. The major problem with shopping in Bali is trying to find bigger sizes. This is still a frustration for many westerners, although things are improving.

Luggage, accessories, sporting goods, toys and games, crockery and household goods are all good buys also.
